XXXIX : Uniformarsi al fondamento

In principio questi ottenner l’Uno:
il Cielo l’ottenne e per esso fu puro,la Terra l’ottenne e per esso fu tranquilla,gli esseri sovrannaturali l’ottennero
e per esso furono potenti,
la valle l’ottenne e per esso fu ricolma,le creature l’ottennero e per esso vissero,
principi e sovrani l’ottennero
e per esso furon retti nel governare il mondo.
Costoro ne furono resi perfetti.
Se il Cielo non fosse puro per esso
temerebbe di squarciarsi,
se la Terra non fosse tranquilla per esso temerebbe di fendersi,
se gli esseri sovrannaturali non fossero potenti per esso
temerebbero d’annullarsi,
se la valle non fosse ricolma per esso temerebbe d’inaridirsi,
se le creature non vivessero per esso temerebbero di spegnersi,
se principi e sovrani non fossero nobili e alti per esso
temerebbero di cadere.
Il nobile ha per fondamento il vile,l’alto ha per basamento il basso.
Perciò quando principi e sovrani chiamano sé stessi
l’orfano, lo scarso di virtù, l’incapace,non è perché considerano lor fondamento il vile?
Ahimé, no!
Quando hai finito d’enumerare le parti del carro ancor non hai il carro.
Non voler essere pregiato come giada né spregiato come pietra.

These things of old obtained unity with the one.
Heaven obtained unity and became clear.
Earth obtained unity and became firm.
The spirits obtained unity and became deities.
The valleys obtained unity and became abundant.
All things obtained unity and became animate.
Princes and kings obtained unity and became rulers of the world.
They all obtained unity with the one.
If Heaven were not clear it might rend.
If Earth were not firm it might crumble.
If the spirits were not deities they might wither.
If the valleys were not abundant they might dry up.
If all things were not animate they might perish.
If princes and kings were not exalted they might be overthrown.
Therefore:
The noble must make humility his root.
The high must make the low its base.
That is why princes and kings call themselves orphaned, desolate, unworthy.
Is that not to make humility their root?
The separate parts make no carriage.
So, do not strive for the shine of jade,
But clatter like stone.
