La festa del lavoro, o dei lavoratori, è celebrata il primo maggio non solo in Italia ma in moltissimi paesi del mondo. La festa del lavoro cade in questo giorno soprattutto per via di quello che accadde nel 1886 negli Stati Uniti in questo periodo dell’anno (una festa del lavoro era stata già celebrata negli anni precedenti a settembre): la polizia sparò sui lavoratori in sciopero a Chicago e uccise due persone. I lavoratori scioperavano per il mancato rispetto della legge che istituiva il tetto delle otto ore lavorative al giorno. Nei giorni successivi ulteriori manifestazioni furono represse dalla polizia e culminarono nella manifestazione di Haymarket, la piazza del mercato delle macchine agricole, durante la quale morirono altre persone – manifestanti e agenti – a causa di un attentato esplosivo. I responsabili dell’organizzazione della manifestazione del primo maggio furono arrestati e processati, sette di loro furono condannati a morte – con prove molto traballanti, per non dire inesistenti. Due condanne furono trasformate in ergastoli dal governatore dell’Illinois. Un condannato a morte si uccise in prigione il giorno prima dell’esecuzione. Altri quattro furono uccisi, e secondo le cronache dell’epoca cantarono la Marsigliese prima di morire. Nel 1890 la Seconda internazionale socialista decise di promuovere in tutto il mondo la festa dei lavoratori, il primo maggio.

In Italia la festa dei lavoratori si tiene il primo maggio dal 1891. La festa fu soppressa dal fascismo e fu ripristinata nel 1945.
Il primo maggio del 1947 duemila persone – soprattutto contadini – manifestarono contro il latifondismo a Portella della Ginestra, in provincia di Palermo. Un attacco armato, deciso dalla mafia con la complicità di chi era interessato a reprimere i tentativi di rivolta dei contadini, portò alla morte di 11 persone e al ferimento di altre 27. Il bandito Salvatore Giuliano fu identificato come il capo degli autori della strage, ma nel tempo si succederanno diverse ipotesi su chi potesse averlo sostenuto e aiutato. Le persone uccise a Portella della Ginestra si chiamavano Margherita Clesceri, Giorgio Cusenza, Giovanni Megna, Francesco Vicari, Vito Allotta, Serafino Lascari, Filippo Di Salvo, Giuseppe Di Maggio, Castrense Intravaia, Giovanni Grifò, Vincenza La Fata. Tre di loro avevano meno di 13 anni.

Labor Day, or workers, is celebrated on May 1 not only in Italy but in many countries around the world. Labor Day falls on this day mainly because of what happened in 1886 in the United States at this time of year (a celebration of the work had already been celebrated in previous years in September): the police fired on striking workers at Chicago and killed two people. The workers went on strike for non-compliance of the law which established the roof of the eight working hours per day. In the following days further demonstrations were repressed by the police and the event culminated in the Haymarket, the market square of agricultural machinery, during which killed other people – protesters and agents – because of a bomb attack. Those responsible for the organization of the event of May were arrested and put on trial, seven of them were sentenced to death – with evidence very shaky, if not non-existent. Two convictions were transformed into life terms by the governor of Illinois. A condemned man killed himself in prison the day before the execution. Four others were killed, and according to the chronicles of sang the Marseillaise before dying. In 1890 the Second Socialist International decided to promote worldwide Labor Day, May 1.

In Italy Labor Day is held on May 1 since 1891. The party was suppressed by fascism and was restored in 1945.
On May of 1947 two thousand people – mostly farmers – demonstrated against landlordism in Portella della Ginestra, in the province of Palermo. An armed attack, decided by the mafia with the complicity of those who were interested in suppressing attempts peasant uprising led to the death of 11 people and injuring another 27. The bandit Salvatore Giuliano was identified as the leader of the authors of the massacre, but over time it will happen several theories about who might have supported and helped. The people killed in Portella della Ginestra is called Margherita Clesceri, Giorgio Cusenza, John Megna, Francesco Vicari, Vito Allotta, Serafino Lascari, Filippo Di Salvo, Giuseppe Di Maggio, Military Intravaia, John Grifò, Vincenza La Fata.
