Si, perchè quando si incontra qualche cosa all’esterno, e non la si è già scoperta interiormente, le si passerà accanto senza vederla. Perché, fra gli esseri umani, i più lasciano che le proprie tendenze istintive si sviluppino liberamente, senza permettere alle facoltà superiori di intervenire per dominarle e orientarle?… Oppure essi le attaccano per annientarle, come se queste fossero nemiche della loro evoluzione. Ebbene, in entrambi i casi commettono un errore perché introducono una divisione fra l’alto e il basso. L’Intelligenza cosmica ha previsto che le facoltà superiori attingano le proprie energie dalle funzioni inferiori; queste ultime, infatti, sono come radici indispensabili affinché quell’albero che è l’uomo possa estrarre dalla propria “terra” le sostanze che trasformerà per dare fiori e frutti. Gli allievi della scuola di Tendai solevano studiare meditazione anche prima che lo Zen entrasse in Giappone. Quattro di loro, che erano amici intimi, si ripromisero di osservare sette giorni di silenzio.

Il primo giorno rimasero zitti tutti e quattro. La loro meditazione era cominciata sotto buoni auspici; ma quando scese la notte e le lampade a olio cominciarono a farsi fioche, uno degli allievi non riuscì a tenersi e ordinò a un servo: «Regola quella lampada!».

Il secondo allievo si stupì nel sentire parlare il primo. «Non dovremmo dire neanche una parola» osservò.

«Siete due stupidi. Perché avete parlato?» disse il terzo.

«Io sono l’unico che non ha parlato» concluse il quarto.

The pupils of the Tendai school used to study meditation before Zen entered Japan. Four of them who were intimate friends promised one another to observe seven days of silence.

On the first day all were silent. Their meditation had begun auspiciously, but when night came and the oil lamps were growing dim one of the pupils could not help exclaiming to a servant: “Fix those lamps.”

The second pupils was surprised to hear the first one talk. “We are not supposed to say a word,” he remarked.

“You two are stupid. Why did you talk?” asked the third.

“I am the only one who has not talked,” concluded the fourth pupil.

Un corvo che aveva rubato un pezzo di formaggio volò su un ramo di un albero.
Una volpe lo vide e volendo per se il formaggio,
si mise a lodare il corvo per la sua eleganza, la sua bellezza,
gli disse che nessuno meglio di lui poteva essere considerato il Re degli uccelli,
e che lo sarebbe diventato presto…

Allora il corvo, per far sentire che aveva una bella voce,
spalancò il becco ed emise un grido.
Subito la volpe si precipitò sul formaggio caduto a terra:

Essere se stessi

Quando nessuno giudica e quando gli altri accolgono,
 si apre un grande spazio per l’ascolto e per manifestare
 la nostra propria vera natura: questo permette di sentire autostima
e di donare il meglio di se stessi. Il mondo allora cammina
nella nostra stessa direzione perchè impariamo ad essere
 davvero noi stessi e non importa  apparire seguire le aspettative di altri.
Solo allora noi siamo liberi portare fuori noi stessi.
