Osho – The mind the mind
And the truth is the foundation for excellence, the very essence of existence is the truth. The question is important, and flows from your heart: “What is truth?” – Lies in you a desire to know what it is. Log in demand. Do not drive this desire, shall enter into it. Close your eyes. Let me focus the question at the most – “What is truth?” Let arises in you a great concentration. Forget everything else, as if your whole life depended on this question: “What is truth?” Leave it becomes a matter of life or death. And groped to answer, because you do not know the answer.
Will reach the answers because the mind always tries to provide answers. But consider the fact that you do not know, so do the question. So how could the mind to give you an answer? The mind does not know, so tell her: “Shut up!” If you knew, you would not need to ask. You do not know, why do you demand.
So do not be fooled by the toys of the mind. It provides you with the toy, says: “Look for it is written in the Bible. Look for it is written in the Upanishads. Look! That is the truth. It was written by Lao Tzu, that’s the truth.” Your mind can throw in front of your eyes every kind of sacred writings: the mind can do quotes, mind you taking them by providing the memory. You have heard many things, you read that much, the mind contains all those memories and can repeat it mechanically. But observe this phenomenon: the mind does not know and everything that the mind repeats is borrowed and that which is borrowed can not help you.
Beware of mind. The mind goes on to quote, the mind knows everything, not knowing at all. The mind is a sham. Gets inside of this phenomenon: I call this intuition. This is not to think. If you think about it, is still the mind. You have to penetrate deeply, you have to observe the phenomenon in depth: the workings of the mind, the way it works. It borrows from everywhere, continues to borrow and accumulate. It un’accaparratrice, un’accaparratrice to know. The mind becomes very wise and when you give her an important question, it gives you an answer totally unimportant – shallow, superficial junk.
Beware of mind. The mind is the devil, there is no other demon. And is your mind. You have to develop intuition – you have to pierce the mind from side to side. Bisects the mind with a precise stroke of the sword: this sword is awareness. Bisects the mind and cross it, go further! If you manage to go beyond the mind and, after the crossing, a moment will arise in you do not mind, this is the answer – not a verbal response, not a quote from scripture, not in quotes, but your truly, a ‘ experience. The truth is an existential experience. The question has immense significance, deep, but you have an extreme respect. Do not rush to find any response at all, otherwise the garbage choke the answer. Do not allow the mind to suppress the response. The method that the mind uses to neutralize the questions and provide answers not experienced, which are not the result of your experience. You are the truth! But the truth can only happen in silence, when even a thought moves, when the mind has nothing to say, in your consciousness when there is even the slightest ripple. When in your consciousness there is the slightest ripple, your consciousness remains intact, free from distortion. When there is a ripple, there is a distortion.
It should be ‘looking at a lake. Standing on the shore, look at your reflection. If there are waves on the lake, the ripples and the wind is blowing, your reflection is wavering. You can not understand what it is – where is the nose and eyes where they are – you can only make assumptions. But when the lake is quiet and the wind is not blowing on the water and there is even the slightest ripple, suddenly you are present. Your reflection is absolutely perfect. The lake becomes a mirror.
Whenever a thought in your consciousness moves, distorts it. And the thoughts are so many millions of thoughts that continue to run fast and it’s always rush hour. Twenty-four hours is rush hour and traffic continues uninterrupted, and each thought is associated with thousands of other thoughts. They hold hands and are all related and interconnected with each other and the crowd rushes all around you. As you may know what is truth? Freed from this crowd.
That’s what meditation is, here is what is meditation: the mind without an awareness, a consciousness without thoughts, without a full awareness of waves – an awareness intact. So the truth is present in all its beauty and blessing. So the truth is – call it God, call it nirvana, or by any other name you want to give her. It is present and is present as an experience. You are in truth, the truth is in you.
Use this question. Make it more penetrating. Force to be fully penetrant, put it in play, so that the mind can trick you with its superficial responses. When the mind is gone, when the mind will not stay longer playing his old tricks, you will know what truth is. The silence in the know. Will know in thoughtless awareness.
