Meditare e pregare
“Meditare e pregare non sono attività qualsiasi: esse devono farvi
provare sensazioni di una natura particolare. Se la meditazione e
la preghiera non vi fanno sentire un calore, una luce, una forza,
una gioia, un incanto, dovete ricercarne la causa.
A volte, si strofina un fiammifero e questo non si accende
perché è umido, oppure forse lo è la scatola; e se un accendino
non funziona, significa che manca benzina o che la pietrina è
consumata. Nelle pratiche spirituali così come sul piano
materiale, i fallimenti hanno sempre una causa che è necessario
trovare. L’intelletto non deve mai essere umido e il cuore non
deve mai essere asciutto. Bisogna che il cuore sia umido e caldo,
e che l’intelletto sia asciutto e freddo. Un cuore asciutto
diventa egoista, e se è freddo, manca d’amore. Se lo si scalda,
l’intelletto si addormenta, e se lo si inumidisce troppo,
marcisce. Queste immagini semplici e chiare devono aiutarvi a
rimediare alle difficoltà della vostra vita interiore.”

Silenzio e preghiera

Se prendiamo come nostra guida il più antico libro di preghiera, il libro dei Salmi, notiamo due principali forme di preghiera. Uno è un lamento, un grido di aiuto. L’altro è di ringraziamento e lode a Dio. Ad un livello più nascosto c’è un terzo tipo di preghiera, senza domande o più esplicite espressioni di lode. Nel Salmo 131, ad esempio, non c’è altro che tranquillità e fiducia: “Io sono tranquillo e sereno …. spera nel Signore, ora e sempre.”
A volte la preghiera diventa silenziosa. Una tranquilla comunione con Dio si può trovare senza parole. “Io sono tranquillo e sereno come un bimbo svezzato in braccio a sua madre” Come un bambino soddisfatto che ha smesso di piangere ed è nelle braccia della madre, così può “stare la mia anima” in presenza di Dio. La preghiera allora non ha bisogno di parole, forse neppure di pensieri.
Come è possibile raggiungere un silenzio interiore? Qualche volta siamo apparentemente in silenzio, e tuttavia abbiamo grandi discussioni dentro di noi, lotte con compagni immaginari o con noi stessi. Calmare la nostra anima richiede una specie di semplicità. “Non mi tengo occupato con cose troppo grandi o troppo meravigliose per me” Silenzio significa riconoscere che le mie preoccupazioni non possono fare molto. Silenzio significa lasciare a Dio ciò che è oltre la mia portata e le mie capacità. Un momento di silenzio, anche molto breve, è come una sosta santa, un riposo sabbatico, una tregua dalle preoccupazioni.
Il tumulto dei nostri pensieri può essere paragonato alla tempesta che colpisce la barca dei discepoli sul mare di Galilea, mentre Gesù stava dormendo. Come loro possiamo sentirci senza aiuto, pieni di ansietà ed incapaci di calmarci. Ma Cristo è abile nel venire in nostro aiuto. Come rimprovera il vento e il mare e “ci fu una grande calma”, egli può anche donare calma al nostro cuore quando è agitato dalla paura e dalle preoccupazioni. (Marco 4)
Rimanendo nel silenzio, confidiamo e speriamo in Dio. Un salmo ci suggerisce che il silenzio è perfino una forma di lode. Siamo soliti leggere all’inizio del Salmo 65: “A te si deve lode, o Dio”. Questa traduzione segue il testo greco, ma effettivamente il testo ebraico dice: “Il silenzio è lode a te, o Dio”. Quando le parole ed i pensieri si fermano, Dio è lodato in un silenzio di stupore e ammirazione.
La parola di Dio: tuono e silenzio
Sul Sinai, Dio parlò a Mosè e agli Israeliti. La parola di Dio fu preceduta ed accompagnata da tuoni e lampi ed un sempre più forte suono di tromba (Esodo 19). Secoli dopo, il profeta Elia tornò sulla montagna di Dio. Lì sperimentò tempesta,terremoto e fuoco, come era successo ai suoi antenati, ed fu pronto ad ascoltare Dio che parlava nel tuono. Ma il Signore non era in nessuno di quei potenti fenomeni familiari. Quando tutto il rumore terminò, Elia udì “il mormorio di un vento leggero” e Dio gli parlò.(1 Re 19)
Dio parla con voce forte o in un mormorio silenzioso? Dobbiamo prendere come esempio le persone riunite sul Sinai o il profeta Elia? Potrebbe essere un’alternativa sbagliata. I terribili fenomeni connessi con il dono dei Dieci Comandamenti servono a mettere in evidenza quanto questi ultimi siano seri. Accoglierli o rigettarli è una questione di vita o di morte. Vedendo un bambino correre sotto una macchina è bene gridare il più forte possibile. In situazioni analoghe i profeti riferiscono le parole di Dio per far vibrare le nostre orecchie.
Le parole dette ad alta voce sono certamente ascoltate: sono di effetto. Ma sappiamo anche che difficilmente toccano i cuori. Sono rigettate piuttosto che accolte. L’esperienza di Elia mostra che Dio non vuole impressionare, ma vuole essere capito ed accettato. Dio sceglie “il mormorio di un vento leggero” per parlare. Questo è un paradosso: Dio è silenzioso e tuttavia parla.
Quando la parola di Dio diventa “il mormorio di un vento leggero” è più efficiente di altre cose per cambiare i nostri cuori. La tempesta sul Monte Sinai spaccava le rocce, ma le parole silenziose di Dio sono capaci di fare breccia nei cuori di pietra degli uomini. Per lo stesso Elia il silenzio improvviso era probabilmente più spaventoso della tempesta e dei tuoni. In qualche modo le manifestazioni potenti di Dio gli erano familiari. Il silenzio di Dio lo disorienta, una cosa così diversa da quella che aveva sperimentato in passato.
Il silenzio ci rende pronti ad un nuovo incontro con Dio. Nel silenzio la parola di Dio può raggiungere gli angoli più nascosti dei nostri cuori. Nel silenzio, la parola di Dio dimostra di essere “efficace e più tagliente di ogni spada a doppio taglio; essa penetra fino al punto di divisione dell’anima e dello spirito” (Ebrei 4,12). Nel silenzio smettiamo di nasconderci di fronte a Dio, e la luce di Cristo ci può raggiungere e guarire e trasformare anche quello di cui ci vergogniamo.
Silenzio e amore
Cristo dice: “Questo è il mio comandamento: che vi amiate gli uni gli altri, come io vi ho amati” (Giovanni 15,12). Abbiamo bisogno di silenzio per accogliere queste parole e metterle in pratica. Quando siamo agitati e irrequieti , abbiamo così tanti argomenti e ragioni per non perdonare e per non amare. Ma quando “abbiamo calmato e reso quieta la nostra anima”, queste ragioni ci paiono insignificanti. Forse qualche volta rifuggiamo il silenzio, preferendo qualunque rumore, parola o distrazione, perché la pace interiore è una cosa rischiosa: ci rende vuoti e poveri, disintegra le amarezze e ci conduce al dono di noi stessi. Silenziosi e poveri i nostri cuori sono ricolmati dello Spirito Santo, riempiti con un amore incondizionato. Il silenzio è un umile ma sicuro cammino verso l’amore.

“Bisogna che tutti noi troviamo il tempo di restare in silenzio e di contemplare, soprattutto se viviamo nelle metropoli come Londra o New York, dove tutto si muove tanto in fretta. Ecco perchè ho deciso di aprire la prima Casa per le sorelle contemplative (la cui vocazione è pregare per buona parte della giornata) a New York anzichè sull’Himalaya: ritenevo che silenzio e contemplazione fossero più necessari nelle città del mondo.
“Comincio sempre la mia preghiera in silenzio, perchè è nel silenzio del cuore che Dio parla. Dio è amico del silenzio: dobbiamo ascoltare Dio perchè ciò che conta non è quello che diciamo noi, ma quello che Egli dice a noi e attraverso di noi”.

“Dio è ovunque e in ogni cosa e senza di Lui non possiamo esistere. Io non ho mai dubitato dell’esistenza di Dio, nemmeno per un momento, ma so che talune persone sono dubbiose. Se non credi in Dio, puoi aiutare gli altri facendo opere d’amore, e i frutti di queste opere saranno le grazie che entrano nella tua anima. Comincerai allora, lentamente, ad aprirti e a desiderare la gioia di amare Dio.

Il frutto della fede è l’amore
“La peggiore malattia dell’Occidente oggi non è la tubercolosi o la lebbra, ma è il non sentirsi desiderati nè amati, il sentirsi abbandonati. La medicina può guarire le malattie del corpo, ma l’unica cura per la solitudine, la disperazione e la mancanza di prospettive è l’amore. Vi sono molte persone al mondo che muoiono per un pezzo di pane, ma un numero ancora maggiore muore per mancanza d’amore. E la povertà in Occidente assume forme nuove: non è solo solitudine, ma è anche povertà spirituale. Vi è fame d’amore, e vi è fame di Dio”.

“La preghiera attiva è amore, e l’amore attivo è servizio. Cerca in ogni momento di dare incondizionatamente qualsiasi cosa di cui una persona abbia bisogn. L’importante è fare qualche cosa (per quanto piccola) e dimostrare con le proprie azioni, donando il proprio tempo, che si vuol bene. A volte vorrà dire impegnarsi in un lavoro fisico (come facciamo nelle nostre Case per i malati e i moribondi), altre volte offrire sostegno spirituale a chi se ne sta sempre chiuso in casa. Se un malato vuole medicine, dàgli medicine, se ha bisogno di conforto, confortalo”.

“Abbiamo il diritto di vivere felici e in pace. Siamo stati creati per questo – per essere felici – e possiamo trovare la vera felicità e la vera pace solo quando siamo in un rapporto d’amore con Dio: vi è grande felicità nell’amarLo. Molti pensano, specie in Occidente, che il denaro renda felici. Io penso invece sia più difficile essere felice se sei ricco, perchè ti è più difficile vedere Dio: hai troppe altre cose cui pensare. Se tuttavia Dio ti ha dato il dono della ricchezza, allora usala per i Suoi scopi: aiutare gli altri, aiutare i poveri, creare posti di lavoro, dare lavoro agli altri. Non sprecare la tua ricchezza: anche avere cibo, una casa, dignità, libertà, salute e istruzione sono tutti doni di Dio, ed è questo il motivo per cui dobbiamo aiutare chi è meno fortunato di noi.

“Meditation and prayer are not any activity: they must make
sensations of a special nature. If meditation and
prayer does not make you feel a warmth, a light, a force,
a joy, a charm, you have to find the cause.

Silence and Prayer
If we take as our guide the oldest prayer book, the book of Psalms, we see two main forms of prayer. One is a lament, a cry for help. The other is of thanksgiving and praise to God For a more hidden level is a third type of prayer, without questions, or more explicit expressions of praise. In Psalm 131, for example, there is nothing but trust and confidence: “I am calm and serene …. hope in the Lord, now and forever. “
At times prayer becomes silent. A quiet communion with God can find no words. “I am calm and serene like a child quieted at its mother,” How satisfied that a child has stopped crying and is in the arms of his mother, so he can “feel my soul” in the presence of God prayer then he has need for words, perhaps not even thought of.
How is it possible to reach an inner silence? Sometimes we are apparently silent, and yet we have great discussions within us, struggles with imaginary companions or with ourselves. The turmoil of our thoughts can be compared to the storm hitting the boat of the disciples on the Sea of Galilee while Jesus was sleeping. Like them, we may feel helpless, full of anxiety and unable to calm down. But Christ is adept at coming to our aid. As rebukes the wind and the sea, “there was a great calm”, he can also give peace to our hearts when it is shaken by fear and worries. (Mark 4)
Remaining in silence, trust and hope in God A Psalm tells us that silence is even a form of praise. We usually read at the beginning of Psalm 65: “To you it must be praise, O God.” This translation follows the greek text, but actually the Hebrew text says: “Silence is praise to thee, O God.” When words and thoughts stop, God is praised in a silence of awe and admiration.
The word of God and silence Thunder
At Sinai, God spoke to Moses and the Israelites. The word of God was preceded and accompanied by thunder and lightning and a louder sound of the trumpet (Exodus 19). Centuries later, the prophet Elijah came to the mountain of God We hope the storm, earthquake and fire, as had happened to his ancestors, and was ready to hear God speaking in the thunder. But the Lord was not in any of those phenomena powerful family. When all the noise was over, Elijah heard “a whisper of a gentle wind,” and God spoke to him. (1 Kings 19)
God speaks in a loud voice or a whisper quiet? We must take as an example the people gathered at Sinai or the prophet Elijah? Could possibly be a wrong. The terrible events associated with the gift of the Ten Commandments serve to highlight what they are serious. Accept or reject is a matter of life or death. Seeing a child in a car is running good scream as loud as possible. In situations such as the prophets refer to God’s words to our ears vibrate.
The words spoken aloud are certainly heard: are having an effect. But we also know that hardly touch the hearts. Are rejected rather than accepted. Elijah’s experience shows that God does not want to impress, but he wants to be understood and accepted. God chooses “the murmur of a gentle wind” to speak. This is a paradox: God is silent and yet speaks.
When the word of God becomes “the murmur of a gentle wind” is more efficient than other things to change our hearts. The storm broke the rocks on Mount Sinai, but the silent words of God are able to break through the stony hearts of men. For the same Elijah the sudden silence was probably the most frightening storm and thunder. Somehow the powerful manifestations of God were familiar. The silence of God is confusing, something so different from what he experienced in the past.
Silence makes us ready for a new encounter with God in silence the word of God can reach the furthest corners of our hearts. In the silence, the word of God proves to be “effective and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit” (Hebrews 4:12). Stop hiding in silence before God, and Christ’s light can reach us and heal and transform what we are ashamed.
Silence and love
Christ says: “This is my commandment: love one another as I have loved you” (John 15:12). We need silence to take up these words and put them into practice. When we are agitated and restless, we have so many arguments and reasons not to forgive and not to love. But when we “have calmed and quieted our soul”, these reasons seem to us insignificant. Maybe sometimes avoid silence, preferring any noise, word or distraction, because inner peace is a dangerous thing: it makes us empty and poor, disintegrates bitterness and leads us to the gift of ourselves. Silent poor and our hearts are filled with the Holy Spirit, filled with unconditional love. Silence is a humble but sure path to love.
