Nati nel 1967 a Leicester dall’incontro tra Charlie Whitney – chitarrista del gruppo The Farinas (una blues band del college) – e Roger Chapman sono tra i primi gruppi britannici a coniare e sviluppare il progressive rock e a privilegiare il 33 giri piuttosto che il più breve 45 giri.

Il loro stile è variopinto (partendo da forti influenze di folk acido e passando per jazz, blues rock e ritmi esotici), caratterizzato dalla voce possente di Roger Chapman, dal violino di Ric Grech e dagli spunti esotici del chitarrista Charlie Whitney.

I primi tre album (e soprattutto Family Entertainment del 1969) delineano e condensano le nuove idee in un repertorio di canzoni atipiche, dai toni accesi, raffinati ed emozionanti.

Il gruppo originale ha subito numerosi cambi di formazione, che includono le partecipazioni, tra gli altri, di John Wetton (che andrà in seguito a militare nei King Crimson) e di Poli Palmer e Jim Cregan, seppur per poco tempo, provenienti dai Blossom Toes. Ric Grech si unirà all’ex Traffic Steve Winwood e ai due ex Cream Eric Clapton e Ginger Baker per dare vita al supergruppo Blind Faith.

Roger Chapman e Charlie Whitney, terminata l’esperienza dei Family, formarono un gruppo blues-rock di poco successo, gli Streetwalkers, attivo fino alla fine degli anni settanta.

Family were an English rock band that formed in late 1966 and disbanded in October 1973. Their style has been characterised as progressive rock, as their sound often explored other genres, incorporating elements of styles such as folk, psychedelia, acid, jazz fusion and rock and roll. The band achieved recognition in the United Kingdom through their albums, club and concert tours and appearances at festivals.[1][2][3][4]

The band’s rotating membership throughout its relatively short existence led to a diversity in sound throughout their different albums. Family are also often seen as an unjustly forgotten act,[1] when compared with other bands from the same period and have been described as an “odd band loved by a small but rabid group of fans”.[2] Despite most of their recordings being issued in the US, the band never achieved any appreciable success there.
