I figli discordi – Esopo

I figli di un contadino non andavano d’accordo, ed egli,
per quanto continuasse ad ammonirli, non riusciva a correggerli.
Pensò allora di ricorrere ad un esempio pratico,
e disse loro di portargli un fascio di verghe.
Unì le verghe in un fascio ben stretto,
le consegnò ai figli e ordinò loro di spezzarle,
ma per quanti sforzi facessero non ci riuscirono.
Allora sciolse il fascio e diede loro le verghe una ad una,
e siccome le rompevano senza difficoltà, soggiunse:
<< Così anche voi, figli miei, se sarete uniti,
non sarete sopraffatti dai nemici,
ma se litigherete, offrirete loro una facile preda. >>
La favola mostra che più grande è la concordia,
maggiore è l’unione e la forza.

The children divided – Aesop

The children of a farmer did not get along, and he,
however he continued to warn, could not correct them.
Then thought to have recourse to a practical example,
and he told them to bring him a bundle of rods.
He joined the rods into a tight beam,
handed to the children and ordered them to break them,
but try as they did they could not.
Then untied the bundle and gave them the rods one by one,
and as the broke without difficulty, he added:
<< So you also, my children, if you will be united,
      you will not be overwhelmed by enemies,
      but if you quarrel, you shall offer them an easy prey. >>
The fable shows that the greater harmony,
greater unity and strength.
